Review by Michael Bassett

Nicholas Wynne gives an imaginative and innovative approach to the playing of scales on the recorder.  The CD gives opportunity for initial tuning as well as the pulse for each melodious exercise along with a complete performance and minus soprano and minus tenor sections.

Do not be put off by the fact that on opening the score you will be confronted by G flat Major!  The scales are arranged in an interesting sequence; not following the conventional Circle of Fifths.  However, the CD contents list inside the score cover gives all the scales in chromatic order along with the appropriate track number.  The musical terms at the head of each piece give and indication of the compositions various styles.

There's much to be gained from studying the chromatic recorder.  These pieces automatically improve one's scale playing; one's sense of key and, paradoxically, one's awareness that there are only five "black" notes!
